Demystifying the Nile. History and Events
How this Happened
Ethiopians had to wait over a thousand years to be able to use their waters for their own development. Ethiopian emperors and leaders have tried to build a dam on the Nile River as part of their development efforts. Unfortunately, due to varying reasons and circumstances, including external pressure from countries near and far, geo- and hydro-political balance
shifts, and internal conflicts, they were not successful in realizing their wishes. Instead of giving up, though, each leader contributed to different extents, by laying the foundation for and addressing challenges faced in making this dream a reality. The masterplan for the dam designed in 1964 has been the seed in waiting ever since, waiting for the right opportunity
to arise for construction to start. Following the decade long negotiation and an agreement on the equitable use of the Nile waters by most Nile riparian countries, and the subsequent Cooperative Framework Agreement, the Ethiopian government started the construction of the GERD in 2011. The waiting had finally ended … It was time for the seed to grow. Twelve years
later, the construction program is almost done. The reservoir already holds billions of cubic meters of water, and the country has produced power from the first two turbines as part of the early power generation milestone. The seed has sprouted, and the tree is on track to be the tallest in Africa.
In this six-part book, Dereje Befekadu Tessema discusses events that started thousands of years ago, culminating in the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He also shares a recount of his trip from the sources to the mouth of the Nile River.
Research Findings
Tessema’s Mulitple Intelligence Framework
The Tessema Multiple Intelligence Framework originated from groundbreaking research conducted in 2010, which explored the connection between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. This initial study surveyed 575 project managers globally, utilizing Bar-On’s 15-point Emotional Intelligence framework alongside Bass and Avolio’s 12-point leadership questionnaire. The findings revealed a direct correlation between emotional intelligence capabilities and leadership effectiveness, suggesting that organizations could significantly enhance leadership performance by implementing targeted emotional intelligence training for employees and executives.
Building on these foundational insights, Dereje Tessema expanded his research over the following decade to explore how other forms of intelligence—Intellectual Quotient (IQ), Spiritual Intelligence (SQ), Cultural Intelligence (CQ), and Social Intelligence (SI)—might collectively contribute to organizational transformation. This comprehensive investigation into the interplay between diverse intelligence dimensions culminated in developing the “Tessema Multiple Intelligence Framework.” This innovative model illustrates how various forms of intelligence progress from personal to social dimensions, forming an integrated pathway toward sustainable organizational change.

An analysus of how Barack Obama used his Emotional intellegence and Transformational Leadership skills to win his “Campaign project”
How this Happened
“How this Happened” is a “creative non-fiction” book written with the intention of making it palatable to a wide audience including the many millions who avidly followed the 2008 US presidential election as well as professionals, and scholars who may be interested in looking at how Barack Obama run a successful campaign by looking at it from the perspective of three theoretical frameworks. The author is engaged in the study of the Emotional Intelligence, Transformational Leadership and Project Management frameworks. He has used his research findings together with his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and his observations while volunteering for the Obama campaign to produce this compelling yet very pleasurable book. Various experts have analyzed Obama’s presidential victory, with some attributing it to the economic meltdown or a reverse Bradley effect, while others have lauded Obama for running the campaign like a business entity. Any or all of these rationales may be correct, but the author would argue that the campaign was a success primarily because it was approached as a project. This book presents the author’s analysis and describes how Obama and his campaign managers carried out this project. The author’s hope is that the discussion will be interesting enough to create an awareness of the role emotional intelligence and transformational leadership play in successfully completing a project and to engage all those who actively followed the campaign in reviewing their experience from a different perspective and recount how such a huge project was run successfully.
Election 2012 – Perfecting the Science of Presidential Campaigning
How this Happened
In an economy struggling with high unemployment rates, a sharply divided country where voters were said to be disengaged from the political system, where the approval rate for the incumbent president was hovering below 50%, and where the media had written off the president from reelection hopes, what made Obama’s campaign become the most successful enterprise in the history of presidential elections?
In this book Dereje B. Tessema discusses what it took to “perfect the science of presidential campaigning” by providing a compelling analysis of how the Obama campaign built the organization from ground up using various analytical techniques to triangulate the massive data gathered together with agile project and program management tools to initiate, plan, execute, control and monitor the campaign program that led to the victory of what some referred to as an “improbable journey”.
Many events have shaped Obama’s first term presidency including the handling of the economy, the auto bailout, financial and health care reforms, war on terror, civil liberties, and the rise of Super PACs and the Tea Party. Tessema examines the impacts of these variables on the 2012 presidential election as well as the strategies, tools, and techniques used by the Obama campaign to address them.
Looking into the next four years and beyond, Tessema shares his viewpoint on the role of government in society and the adverse effect when it is dysfunctional, the impact of the emerging American mosaic and challenges to political participation, as well as lessons learned from this election.
