Dereje Befekadu Tessema is a scholar-practitioner, consultant, researcher, publisher, and volunteer with over 20 years of experience bridging academia and industry. As an expert in higher education and a leader in managing complex IT and non-IT programs for the U.S. Federal Government and private sector, he specializes in enterprise architecture, project management, and solution delivery. From initial assessment to system design, execution, deployment, and support, he has played a pivotal role in implementing and sustaining countless enterprise systems.
As a researcher, Dereje developed the Tessema Multiple Intelligence Model, contributing to organizational transformation and agility theory. A lifelong learner, he remains at the forefront of technological and managerial advancements and is currently finalizing his second PhD in Sustainability, focusing on Organizational Transformation and Agility. His latest book, Demystifying the Nile (2023), explores the sustainability of the Nile River alongside its geopolitical and hydro-policy challenges.
Recognized for his contributions to academia, Dereje was named Outstanding Professor of the Year by two U.S. universities in 2014 and 2025. Committed to extending his success to significance, he actively leads and participates in nonprofit organizations, including Teach and Serve for Africa (TASFA) and the BD Foundation, dedicated to knowledge-sharing and capacity-building. Through these initiatives, he has contributed his expertise, time, and resources to train over 14,000 professionals across Africa and worldwide, furthering education and professional development in emerging markets.
Beyond his professional and academic endeavors, Dereje is an avid runner. Since 2017, he has logged over 3,300 miles, completing eight full marathons and more than 20 half marathons, demonstrating his dedication to discipline, endurance, and personal growth.

research findings
Building on his 2010 dissertation research on Emotional Intelligence, Dereje developed Tessema’s Model for Multiple Intelligences in 2018. This model illustrates the interrelationship between the three personal intelligences —Intellectual (IQ), Emotional (EQ), and Spiritual (SQ) — and cultural and social intelligences in driving organizational transformation and agility. His work has since become a foundational pillar in corporate transformation and sustainability progams, shaping strategies for adaptive leadership and long-term organizational success.
